Dr. Dan K. Gikonyo – Consultant Physician / Adult Cardiologist

Dr. Dan Gikonyo is the Chief Cardiologist at The Karen Hospital, Nairobi. He is also the Founder director of The Karen Hospital and Heart to Heart Foundation.

He is a well-known cardiologist with over 43 years’ experience in the medical field. Dr Dan Gikonyo also runs cardic clinics at The Karen Hospital Nakuru Branch located at Tower One Building Moi Road, The Karen Hospital Nyeri Branch located at Caledonia House Kenyatta Avenue, Nyeri town and The Karen Hospital Meru Branch located on Njuri Ncheke Street as a cardiologist in all the clinics.

He has been instrumental in mentoring and training of majority of adult cardiologists in the country and in the region. He is both interventional and non-invasive adult cardiologist who actively participates in continuing medical education through seminars and workshops organized by diverse stakeholders.

He started his practise in 1975 at the Nakuru Provincial Hospital. With over four decades of experience, Dr. Gikonyo has attended to thousands of patients drawn from various parts of the world.

He is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Adult Cardiology from University of Minnesota, USA. He also holds a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from University of Nairobi and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, University of Nairobi.

Dr. Gikonyo who is a member of the American College of Cardiology previously lectured at the Faculty of Medicine (University of Nairobi.) He was also a researcher scholar in Cardiology. He is also a member of Kenya Medical Association and Kenya Cardiac Society. He has attended several international conferences and written numerous papers touching on cardiac and other topical health matters.

Dr. Anthony K. Gikonyo – Physician/ Cardiologist

Dr. Antony Gikonyo is an interventional and non-invasive adult cardiologist at The Karen Hospital, Nairobi and a Cardiologist at The Karen Hospital Nairobi CBD Branch located at Cardinal Otunga Plaza First Floor next to Holy Family Basilica.

Prior to taking up full-time private practise under the Nairobi Heart Clinic at The Karen Hospital, Dr. Antony Gikonyo worked at Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi Hospital. At The Karen Hospital, he performs Surgical and Interventional, Coronary artery and aortic procedures and actively participates in continuous medical education through seminars and workshops at The Karen Hospital.

He graduated from Howard Medical School in 2001 and then became a member of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 2007. He completed his cardiology training in 2011, South Africa. He is part of the Heart Team which performs regular coronary and artery bypass grafts.

For the past four years he has been in-charge of the medical internship programme at the Karen Hospital, Nairobi. His most recent publication includes Retrospective Review of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery at The Karen Hospital, Kenya among other research papers.

Dr. Premanand Ponoth – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon

Dr. Premanand Ponoth is the Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at The Karen Hospital, Nairobi. He joined the institution in early 2017.
Dr. Premanand has been a Cardiac surgeon for more than 25 years and has performed more than 15,000 surgeries since he started practising.

At The Karen Hospital, Nairobi alone, he has been able to perform over 150 open heart operations since he joined the institution. Dr. Premanand performs CABG surgeries on “beating hearts” which means, the heart is not stopped. In other similar operations the heart is usually stopped and then a heart-lung machine takes over the functions of the heart.

He attended a Fellowship in heart and lung transplantation at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland OR, USA. Dr. Ponoth holds a Bachelor of Medicines-Bachelor of Surgery, Nalanda Medical College, Patna Bihar, India.

He has served in reputed cardio thoracic centres in USA, Australia and New Zealand. He has also done a fellowship in heart and lung transplantation at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR, United States.

Prior to joining The Karen Hospital, he was the Chief of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at Trust Fund for Specialised Medical Care and Cardiac Centre in Mauritius.

Dr. Premanand worked in Mauritius for one and a half years under the invitation of the Government of Mauritius. He was a senior consultant and senior cardiac surgeon. He has attended numerous international conferences and written numerous articles on cardiac and other health topics.

Dr. Shrikant Panchal – Cardiac Anaesthesiologist

Dr. Shrikant Panchal is a Cardiac Anaesthesiologist at The Karen Hospital, Nairobi with over 17 years working experience and has performed more than 10,000 cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries.

He has the following qualifications MBBS, DA, DNB, PGDHS and Fellow Cardiac Anaethesia. He is also a life member and fellow Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. His first case of an open heart surgery was in 2001.

Dr. Panchal has specialized in adult and paediatric cardiac anaesthesia. He is also an intensivist for adult and paediatric post cardiac surgery cases.

Prior to joining The Karen Hospital he was in charge of cardiac anaesthesia at Bollineni Super Specialty Hospital in India/PIMS.

It is not all work for Dr. Shrikant. The father of two enjoys watching movies, listening to music and taking his family to the temple for prayers.

Dr. Ruot Garjiek Teny Yok – Physician and Cardiology Fellow

Dr. Ruot Teny is a Physician and Cardiology Fellow at The Karen Hospital, Nairobi with 11 years of experience in his field he has attended more than 50 angiograms and performed more than 10 coronary angiogram with supervision.
Dr. Ruot is a graduate from The University of Juba with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree. He further joined the University of Nairobi for a Masters of Medicine in Internal Medicine.

Having The Karen Hospital in August, 2017, he has been productive and efficient in his work ever since
He also has experience in performing echocardiogram, exercise stress test and interpreting exercise stress test, 24 hours holter monitor and 12 leads ECG. Dr. Ruot also runs cardiac clinic at The Karen Hospital Naivasha branch located at Luxor Towers and Nakuru branch located on Tower One Building Ground Floor Moi Road. In the cardiac clinics he performs ECG and ECHOs and sending referrals thereafter to the Main Hospital for those clients who require 4 cathlab procedures and surgeries. Prior to joining The Karen Hospital, Dr. Ruot worked at Kenyatta National Hospital as Internal Medicine Registrar from October 2013 to May 2017.

In an effort to boost efficiency in his work, Dr. Ruot has attended many local and international conferences notably Stemi Live, Nairobi Feb 2017 and Pascar (Pan African Society of Cardiology) in Khartoum- Sudan October 2017

Dr. Baseem Mikhail – Cardiologist

Dr. Baseem Mikhail is a Cardiologist at The Karen Hospital, Nairobi with 12 years working experience in the medical field and has been able to see close to 30 patients on a daily basis since 2006.

Dr. Baseem also runs cardiac clinics at The Karen Hospital Naivasha Branch located at Tower One Building, Moi Road performing ECGs and ECHOs and later sending referrals to the main hospital for patients who require cathlab procedures and surgeries.

Dr. Baseem was educated at Sedfa Secondary School Egypt and later joined the university where he pursued a degree and further Masters in Cardiology.
He joined The Karen Hospital on 19th February, 2018 and has shown great efficiency in his work. Prior to joining The Karen Hospital he worked at Coptic Hospital.

Regardless of his busy schedule, Dr. Baseem loves playing and watching football, reading and is eager to learn more in any field.
